X Safety Bus

I’ve done a Mainichi Weekly column on this mistake before. I guess the writer of this sign doesn’t read Mainichi Weekly! haha

“Safety” is a noun, not an adjective. So we could simply correct this to:

O Safe Bus

But it doesn’t sound very natural to me, for advertising. Perhaps one of these would be better:

O Our buses are safe

O Ride our buses with confidence

And actually, the meaning of the Japanese is a bit different. A better translation would be:

O Our buses have been certified as safe

Ayumi says:

“safety” は名詞ですので、ここではbusを修飾する形容詞 “safe” が必要です。でも、”Safe Bus” ではただの「安全なバス」となってしまい、これがバスに書いてあったとしたらとっても不自然。

日本語を見てみると「安全性評価認定」。日本語では「認定」と名詞扱いですが、英語にするとしたらセンテンスで、Our buses have been certified as safe などでしょうか。

ところで、なぜ “Safety Bus” となってしまったか？

推理するに、 safety belt（安全ベルト） safety standard（安全基準） safety control（安全管理） これらの複合名詞と一緒になってしまっているのかも知れない。 “safe belt” だとしたら、safeがbeltを修飾して「安全なベルト」。でもここではベルトが安全な訳ではなく「安全のためのベルト」という意味なので “safety belt” となり、根本的に使い方が違いますね。
