X May I ask a favor. Please refrain from bringing the goods before payment in the restroom.
Tim says:
Excuse me, where’s the cash register? … In the restroom?!
I know that’s not what they’re trying to say here, but it says I need to do something “before payment in the restroom”, so it certainly sounds as if I have to pay in the washroom!
One problem is that the parts of this sentence are not in the right order. Also “May I ask a favor?” (it should be a question!) sounds fine when spoken, but looks very strange on a sign. I think we can get rid of it completely; the sign already has “please” on it, and that’s enough.
O Please do not take any items to the restroom before buying them.
